The Commissioner of the Revenue is elected to serve the citizens every four years. The primary responsibilities of the Commissioner of the Revenue are outlined in Title 58.1 of the Code of VA. The Commissioner must follow guidelines as set forth by the Virginia General Assembly, the Dept. of Taxation & the local Board of Supervisors. It is the commissioner’s responsibility to enforce these policies in a manner that is fair to all citizens.
The office of the Commissioner of the Revenue has many duties. Some of these duties are:
• Assess all types of property; real estate and personal property (both individual and business)
• Assess any new construction or remodeling of real estate each year.
• Responsible for maintaining real estate ownership and updating tax maps.
• Assist residents of Brunswick County with the filing of their VA individual income and estimated tax returns.
• Administer tax relief to disabled veterans that qualify.
• Process transient occupancy tax.
• Assist the public and taxpayers with various inquiries.
It is the goal of the commissioner’s office to:

• Provide fair and equitable assessments to the best of our ability
• Provide efficient and courteous service in a timely manner
• Be available to assist the citizens of Brunswick County when needed
